christmas time on the island

christmas has kind of gradually lost its spark the older i've gotten. i started forgetting that feeling of anticipation and cheer that children exude this time of year. because i don't care about material objects much anymore and i don't think i believe in santa ;) . i know the "christmas spirit" is meant to be about more than shopping for presents and baking festive cookies and wearing scarves in cold weather... but this year, without those little seemingly meaningless things, it hasn't felt the slightest bit like christmas.

the islanders sure do try--all of st thomas has been decked out in green and red since thanksgiving. but no matter how many lights are strung on skinny palm trees or how many shirtless guys wear santa hats and antlers, i just haven't been buying it. christmas music sounds way too silly when you're barefoot on a beach.
