hide meee //

everyone who actually experienced a winter this year is yearning for spring and aching for sunlight, while all i want to do is HIDE FROM IT. oh, the irony.

i spent 7 hours yesterday doing maintenance on our catamaran. 7 hours in your beloved sun. it was the kind of maintenance that had me out on the top deck with no shade, pulling out batons, weaving and tightening lines, dangling off the bow of the boat like a true deck hand.

it was actually fun work--i enjoy the ins and outs of sailing. but boy did i bake. i didn't burn (because i hardly can anymore), but my skin has never been so dry and tight and thirsty. my hands are cracked and calloused. the ends of my hair are bleached and as stiff as straw.

i've seen the sun bleach the stains out of our white benches, turn the black straps on our forward nets white, and make my sanuk shoes so dry that they feel like they could crumble into a hundred pieces. if those poor inanimate objects couldn't hold up, how could parts of me make it more than a season?

this is to say, my skin and hair and hands can't take much more of the caribbean sun. not to mention my constantly squinting eyes (because i can't seem to keep a pair of sunglasses). and my poor, poor feet. we have a "barefoot boat" which means rough non-skid decks and splintered docks, from morning til dawn.

and thaaat's why i usually try to be nocturnal on the weekends here. to rest my skin and bones. and to only expose them to moonlight. today, i slept in late and then took a 3 hour nap... so far so good ;)

Going to school in Arizona I totally get where you are coming from. I honestly believed I had opposite seasonally affectiveness disorder last semester because there was just too.much.sun!! Hang in there! (OR pass it to Italy... that would be cool too.)

Ouh, staying a lot in sun must be hard. I am really pale skinned, easily burn and couldn't take that much sun at all. I do still miss the sun and want to get some color soon!
